Solar gate opener vs electric: which suits a Northern Colorado site?

It comes down to the site’s winter sun and the operator. LiftMaster’s LA400UL manual says solar powered gate operator installations are not supported in northern climates due to cold weather and a reduced number of hours of sunlight during the winter months.⁶ The manual doesn’t define ‘northern climates’; LiftMaster’s solar guide gives its extra-tilt rule for states that border Canada.⁷

A hardwired operator can take a heater that solar cannot. LiftMaster’s RSW12UL and RSL12UL manuals both state that a heater cannot be used with a solar application,⁴⁵ and the cold-weather guide shows why that matters: only heated configurations in its table are rated below −17°F.⁸⁵⁴ On a hardwired gate, the HTR keeps the gearbox and batteries at a suitable temperature when the outside temperature is below −4°F, powered from 110 to 250 Vac.⁴⁵

Some operators are built for either. LiftMaster lists the RSW12UL swing operator as solar-ready, with battery backup;⁹ its manual rates it for 1,000 lb at 6 ft, falling to 400 lb at 16 ft.⁵

Larger than standard, in a cold winter. For solar-powered LiftMaster operators, the solar reference guide recommends 33Ah batteries in place of the standard 7Ah where temperatures stay below 32°F for more than two weeks along with snow on the panel or short winter days.⁷

LiftMaster’s solar reference guide says a solar operator’s daily cycle rate and standby time will be reduced by at least 50% when temperatures stay below −4°F for more than two weeks.⁷ NOAA’s Fort Collins, Loveland 2N and Greeley UNC stations each recorded −17°F or colder between 2022 and 2024.¹⁰¹¹¹²

Solar gate opener not working in winter?

Check the panel’s sun first. LiftMaster calls for solar panels clear of obstructions and shading for the entire day, and its LA400 manual notes that trees or buildings that do not shade a panel in summer can shade it in winter, when the sun sits lower.⁷⁶ Mighty Mule’s solar manual asks for at least 8 hours of direct sunlight with the panel facing due south.¹³

Winter sun is thin to begin with. NREL modeled data put global horizontal irradiance in Fort Collins at 2.01 kWh per square meter per day in December, less than half the 4.40 kWh annual average.¹ On a panel tilted at latitude, the same data put the December figure at 4.06 kWh per square meter per day.¹

How much does a solar gate opener cost?

HomeGuide (2023) says solar-powered gate openers add $400 to $2,000+ to installation costs.² For the whole job, HomeAdvisor says installing an automatic driveway gate costs most homeowners $2,500–$5,000 nationally.¹⁴ These are national figures, not local quotes.
