Quick answer: Colder than every unheated rating in the table below. NOAA’s Fort Collins, Loveland 2N and Greeley UNC stations each recorded −17°F or colder between 2022 and 2024.123 LiftMaster rates the RSW12UL and RSL12UL from −4°F to 140°F without a heater and down to −40°F with its HTR heater,456 but that heater cannot be used with a solar application.5
A cold rating is the manufacturer’s stated operating range for one model. The table below lists only models whose ratings come from the manufacturer’s own pages and documents.
How cold does it get in Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley?
Cold enough to pass every unheated rating in the table below. Only heated configurations in the table are rated below −17°F.765 NOAA’s station records show −17°F at Fort Collins in 2022 and 2024, −18°F at Greeley in 2022 and −24°F at the Loveland 2N station in 2024.123 The Fort Collins record low is −41°F, set in 1951.1
Deep cold is not an every-night event. Under the 1991–2020 normals, Fort Collins averages 4.4 nights a year at or below 0°F.8 Loveland 2N averages 9.6 nights a year at or below 0°F.9 Greeley averages 5.5 nights a year at or below 0°F.10
Which gate openers are rated for extreme cold?
Of the models in the table below, three reach lower than −5°F, and all three do it with a heater. The Viking R-6, with its built-in heater, is rated to −20°F,7 and the LiftMaster RSW12UL and RSL12UL reach −40°F only with the HTR heater.456 Mighty Mule rates the MM571W and MM572W for −5°F to +160°F, and Ghost Controls gives its actuators a recommended range of −5°F to +160°F; neither lists a heater.1112
Read the rating on the model’s own data sheet; a rating does not carry from one model to another.
What does LiftMaster’s HTR heater do?
It keeps the gearbox and batteries at a suitable temperature in the cold. LiftMaster’s RSW12UL and RSL12UL manuals describe the Model HTR heater as keeping the gearbox and batteries at a suitable temperature when the outside temperature is below −4°F, with the thermostat set between 45°F and 60°F and power from 110 to 250 Vac.56
Both manuals also state that a heater cannot be used with a solar application.56 On a solar-powered LiftMaster gate, the cold-weather guidance turns to the batteries instead.
Are solar powered gate openers any good in a Northern Colorado winter?
They work within limits that cold and short days tighten. For solar-powered LiftMaster operators, the solar reference guide recommends 33Ah batteries in place of the standard 7Ah where temperatures stay below 32°F for more than two weeks along with snow on the panel or short winter days.13 LiftMaster’s solar reference guide says a solar operator’s daily cycle rate and standby time will be reduced by at least 50% when temperatures stay below −4°F for more than two weeks.13
LiftMaster’s LA400 manual goes further: solar powered gate operator installations are not supported in northern climates due to cold weather and a reduced number of hours of sunlight during the winter months.14 The manual doesn’t define ‘northern climates’; LiftMaster’s solar guide gives its extra-tilt rule for states that border Canada.13
Winter sun is the other limit. Global horizontal irradiance in Fort Collins averages 2.01 kWh per square meter per day in December, less than half the 4.40 kWh annual average.15 LiftMaster calls for solar panels clear of obstructions and shading for the entire day, and its LA400 manual notes that trees or buildings that do not shade a panel in summer can shade it in winter, when the sun sits lower.1314 Mighty Mule’s solar manual asks for at least 8 hours of direct sunlight with the panel facing due south.16
What happens to an automatic gate when the power goes out?
It depends on the batteries and one setting. The LA400 ships with two 7Ah backup batteries that keep the gate running through a power outage (LiftMaster).17 When AC power is off and the battery runs critically low, LiftMaster’s BATT FAIL setting latches the gate at a limit until power returns; with the option switch set to OPEN the gate opens and latches open, and set to CLOSE it latches closed.14
Some operators also build in a manual release. FAAC’s UK product page describes the 770N underground swing operator’s manual release as a lever-style release protected by a lock.18
What should you check before choosing an opener for a cold site?
Four things to check:
- The rated low without a heater, next to the −17°F-or-colder lows NOAA’s Fort Collins, Loveland 2N and Greeley UNC stations each recorded between 2022 and 2024.123
- Whether a heater exists and has power. LiftMaster’s HTR runs on 110 to 250 Vac and cannot be used with a solar application.5
- For solar, battery size and sun. LiftMaster recommends 33Ah batteries for solar operators where it stays below 32°F for more than two weeks, and a panel clear of shade all day.13
- The power-loss setting, open or closed, for when the battery runs down.14
