Automatic gate installation: what to settle first.

Much of an automatic gate install is decided on paper: who has to approve it, how far back it sits, what the ground allows, how it is powered and which safety standards it meets. National cost figures sit in the table above and in the driveway gate cost page.

Does a gate across a fire access road need approval?

In Fort Collins, yes. Fort Collins’ adopted section 503.6 says the installation of security gates across a fire apparatus access road shall be approved by the fire code official, and installed gates need an approved means of emergency operation.⁴ Fort Collins’ adopted §D103.5 text contains no single-family driveway exception.⁴

Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Windsor Severance Fire Rescue and the Town of Johnstown each carry an exception for private driveways serving one single-family residence, as approved by the fire code official.⁵⁶⁷ Greeley has not adopted Appendix D; its code adopts Appendices B and C, so a gate there falls under the general security-gate section, 503.6.⁸ The fire-access guide compares every town line by line.

How far back from the road does a gate need to sit?

Far enough for the longest vehicle to pull off the road, where a driveway meets a Larimer County road. Larimer County’s Rural Area Road Standards, section 10.4.16, say an access with a gate across it shall be designed so the longest vehicle using it, trailers included, can completely clear the traveled way when the gate is closed.⁹ The county’s access-permit guidance lists a 50 ft minimum gate setback for single-family accesses; that figure comes from the access-permit page, not from the road standards.¹⁰

Where its gate rules apply, Windsor Severance Fire Rescue sets gates for one- or two-family dwellings at a 12 ft minimum width, set back at least 30 ft from the intersecting roadway.¹¹

Can an automatic gate go on a sloped driveway?

It depends on the gate and the operator. LiftMaster’s LA400UL installation manual says: “DO NOT install on uphill or downhill gates.”¹ On the slide side, PalmSHIELD says cantilever slide gates must be installed level, with the bottom at least 2 in above the highest grade point along the travel.¹² Sliding driveway gates covers cantilever run-back space.

Should the gate run on hardwired power or solar?

It depends on the site’s winter sun and whether the operator needs a heater. LiftMaster’s HTR heater runs on 110 to 250 Vac and cannot be used with a solar application.¹³ For solar, LiftMaster calls for solar panels clear of obstructions and shading for the entire day.¹⁴ Solar gate openers covers batteries and winter sun in full.

What safety standards apply to an automatic gate?

In Fort Collins, D103.5 items 9 and 10 require electric gate operators, where provided, to be listed to UL 325, and gates intended for automatic operation to be built and installed to ASTM F2200.⁴ LiftMaster’s RSL12UL manual calls for two independent monitored entrapment protection devices at each entrapment zone.¹³ The manual also says the operator is for vehicular passage gates only, not pedestrian gates, and that pedestrians must be supplied with a separate access opening.¹³

Do I need a permit for an automatic gate?

It depends on the town and the work. In Fort Collins, fences up to 6 ft tall are exempt from a building permit; the city’s exemption list doesn’t name gates separately.¹⁵ In Fort Collins, a gate across a fire apparatus access road also needs the fire code official’s approval described above.⁴ Access for keypads, remotes and the fire department is covered under gate access control, and existing openers under gate opener repair.
